the endeavour of creating meaninglessness
This is a place of constant (meaningless) repetition -
this is the place for meaningless (constant) repetition -
where things repeated a million times and less cease to make sense.
as a child, I played a repetitive game with my sister. we would select a word - something with an amusing sound- and repeat it until it detached from its meaning.
“ bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola, bresaola…”
“forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta, forchetta...”
these were our preferred words. bresaola (smoked ham) and forchetta (fork)
repetition brings forward the constructed nature of the world that surrounds us. it allows us to observe that forms and objects do not possess intrinsic meaning, that meaning is assigned and that it can just as well be subverted.
in adult life, i recognized the same meaninglessness in the performances which are demanded from people and bodies, actions that are taught in a certain way until they make sense in no other form. repetition is what tradition and cultural constructs hinge upon, it is the way habits are formed and histories are solidified.
I can’t shake the feeling that words per se are meaningless, as many of the concepts that surround us, everything depends on the expectations that we have of what we don’t know, and instead of learning that we learn a set way of thoughts
To examine this dynamic, I chose a section of wall and photographed it repeatedly. The aim is to recreate its fragmented image exactly, over and over, as an experimentation of endurance and imitation.
Curabitur congue accumsan ante, consectetur eleifend purus laoreet in. Ut facilisis tincidunt neque in pharetra. In ut libero ut ex commodo venenatis ac vel ligula. Suspendisse tortor lacus, ultrices at magna in, ullamcorper faucibus sem.
The performance lasted five days, in total it lasted 32h.
Every day, I enter the room and I take pictures of the wall with a Hasselblad, develop them, print them, and reconstruct the same wall through images.
The act itself becomes mechanical—mirroring the routines we unconsciously follow in life. But even within repetition, there are changes: the marks on the wall, the subtle shifts in my body, the questions the audience leaves behind
I shot 13 rolls. Fomapan 100 and 400.
